For those of us without an Apple TV subscription there will be a rare chance to watch a great WW2 drama. Apple is offering a free weekend trial of Apple TV (https://shorturl.at/zSNvN). A great action movie focusing on the "Greyhounds of the Fleet," Navy Destroyers. Tin Cans (because of their aluminum superstructure, or greyhounds were nicknames commonly used to describe Destroyers and Guided-Missile Destroyers. (I am happy to include myself in this category of sailors who served on these types of ships).
Greyhound is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat war drama that stars Tom Hanks as Commander Ernest Krause, a seasoned yet humble leader tasked with protecting a convoy of Allied ships during World War II. Based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd and written by Hanks himself, the film dives straight into the action and doesn’t let up.
Set in 1942, the story follows Krause as he commands the USS Keeling (nicknamed "Greyhound") through the “Black Pit”—a dangerous stretch of the Atlantic where air support can’t reach. Things get tense fast as a group of German U-boats (known as a “wolfpack”) begins hunting them down. What unfolds is a relentless game of cat-and-mouse, filled with torpedo dodges, high-stakes decisions, and nail-biting moments.
What makes Greyhound stand out isn’t just the action (which is stellar) but also its focus on Krause. He’s not some over-the-top action hero—he’s a man doing his best under insane pressure. Hanks plays him with such quiet strength and vulnerability that you can’t help but root for him. Clocking in at just 90 minutes, the movie doesn’t waste a second. It’s a tight, intense ride that throws you straight into the chaos of naval warfare. With stunning visuals, a pulse-pounding score, and Hanks at the helm, Greyhound is a must-watch for history buffs and action fans alike. If you’re looking for a movie that combines non-stop thrills with heartfelt moments, this one delivers. Buckle up—Greyhound will have you holding your breath from start to finish.
