One of my favorite topics to discuss with teams is the need for consistency and quality. Uniformity in how tasks are performed and the goal of excellence, not perfection. One of my favorite examples is Navy Carrier Flight Operations. The goal cannot be “Let’s safely land most of the aircraft.” It is the safe recovery of all aircraft. Helpful to the discussion is the color-coding of flight deck personnel and how each is expected to perform their role. One little known fact about carrier ops – all NATO carriers follow the same color coding and identical use of hand signals, meaning a US Navy pilot can land and take-off of a French Aircraft Carrier and expect everything to be the same.
