Over the past three years, we have learned quite a bit about ourselves, our relationship with work, and self-care. There is one aspect of work I make a point to practice at home — safety and self-care. Our CEO at Hitachi Energy, Claudio Facchin states, “We as an organization take safety, integrity, and quality as our license to operate…” This bold statement calls out and challenges every individual in the company to stand up and support these fundamental values in the workplace. Safety, quality, integrity, and even profitability are all intertwined. Please see my article on how the new CEO of ALCOA Steel turned the company around, based on safety. http://highcaliberteams.com/ALCOA and safety I attended a Military Employee Resource Group meeting for veterans last week. We began the meeting by discussing safety. One of our HSE representatives for North America Herman Baker. We spent a few minutes discussing safety at work, then safety at home. A point was made that the more a workplace emphasizes safety, the more safe an employee is at home. I thought about this statement over the past week and agree. The afternoon temperatures (95F, 35C) and UV levels in Texas are forcing me to move my daily walking routine into the early morning. At this time, it is a much more comfortable temperature, but dark. Even though my route relies on sidewalks, the timing puts me on the road well before sunrise. As I was lacing up, I thought about my meeting the previous week and asked myself, “How can I improve my visibility to cars while walking this morning?” It took a few minutes, but I finally found it – a very well-worn reflective belt. It must be twenty years old. It really is true. An emphasis on safety in the workplace means the colleague will also emphasize safety at home.
